Sad News - 7 January 2012
Hi all
I do apologise most sincerely for only sending this mail out now, as some of you may well have already heard the news. Sadly, Anton lost his battle against the cancer, and passed away on 26 December, after a long and painful struggle, having been in hospital in Bloemfontein, since 4th November. It would appear that the treatment had had very little effect, as his cancer was one of those aggressive ones. This has been an extremely difficult time for us all, as Anton was more than just a friend to me, but more like a brother, and it has been difficult to deal with losing such a close and genuine friend.
We attended a memorial service for him yesterday in Queenstown, as the cremation was a private family affair in Bloemfontein. We were privileged that his sisters and families, as well as his good friend Pieter, travelled down from Bloem to join us for the service. Unfortunately his mother was not well enough to attend, as she has also been in and out of hospital, the past few months. It was a very touching and emotional ceremony, also attended by many of his colleagues, business associates, friends, and of course, his biker friends, who came from far and wide. After the church service, we proceeded to our bikers clubhouse, and held a wake to celebrate his life, as we believe he would have appreciated and enjoyed that.
A group of six of us biker friends returned only yesterday morning, from a week-long bike tour to the Magaliesberg / Western Transvaal, of which Anton had done the organising and planning earlier this past year. He had been so looking forward to this, as he had hoped he would be well enough to go along, and that was the reason the trip went ahead, as a tribute and dedication to him and his passion for biking.
We will most certainly miss him, and his very cheerful, enthusiastic and positive outlook on life. He most definitely was, and still is, a legend and inspiration in our lives.
Sincere thanks must surely go to Derek Wormald [Worms], for the most fitting tribute in his eulogy to Anton yesterday, as well as Jackie’s e-mail which was read out at the service as well. Also, a huge thanks to Corene and all her helpers for arranging and organising the events yesterday. Thanks too, to Mark Manthe for conducting the service.
Best regards, in memory of Anton.
